What Makes Woodson Regional So Special
by Eve Cogdell
As a Reporter/Author/Writer/and Poet, I have come to rely very heavily on my local library as a critical point of reference. For several years, Woodson Regional Library, located just a block from my house, has provided me with the necessary tools to succeed in writing my various articles. These important research tools include, websites, newspapers, magazines and reference books.
Woodson Regional has also assisted me in promoting my books and poetry. It has presented excellent networking and marketing opportunities. I have been one of several featured Authors on numerous occasions. What I enjoy most about these opportunities is the fact that I am able to promote my works at nominal costs to me, as well as to meet and share my works with people of diverse backgrounds.
This past summer I experienced a jazz concert sponsored by Woodson Regional. Although they have had these concerts for years, this was the first time I had been able to attend. The concert, which was well attended, was very uplifting and inspirational.
Finally, libraries are very important institutions because they encourage young people and children to read and learn about the world around them. Not only have I benefited personally from using the library, but I have also been a Reading Volunteer. As a Reading Volunteer, I mentored young children by reading my short stories to them, then discussing the stories with them. I found the children were very responsive and eager to share their feelings and thoughts about what they had heard.
In general, the future of libraries looks very bright, as their material and resource bases expand, thus making them more knowledgeable. Scores of people from all walks of life and of all ages, will benefit greatly from the ever-advancing technology of libraries. With their diverse and free programs as well as their many opportunities to learn, explore, network, market and appreciate culture, libraries are one of the best resources available. Libraries are necessary for our continued growth and development.
