The Radford Public Library: My Other Home

In my opinion, the Radford Public Library has a setting that makes you feel welcome, as if you had found a second home. I feel that way because of the inviting groups, the annual Christmas tree lighting, and a section of the library made especially for young adults, like me.

The club I participated in the most at my library is the Chess Club. I was active in the Chess Club for about a year and a half and enjoyed it fully the time I was in it. They welcomed me with open arms and encouraged my liking of the game of chess. It ran for about an hour and a half and allowed you to spend time with friends or make new ones over a friendly game. The leaders were also fun to be around. It made afternoons after school different, but it was a good different.

Yesterday, I attended my library’s annual Christmas tree lighting. This is one of the things that I enjoy going to each year around Christmastime. They usually have a bell choir that performs a few Christmas songs. Then they have some audience participation with the bells. Then, everyone goes outside where there is a countdown before the grand lighting. Suddenly, the home tree springs to life, bulbs glaring brightly. After the tree glows with everyone looking up at it for a while, then comes more carols lead by, you’ll never guess it, some of the librarians! During the entirety of this exciting event, you can help yourself to hot chocolate and Christmas cookies on a table near the front.

Finally, probably my favorite part of the Radford Public Library is the Teen section. It is made for young people ages 12+ and has computers, comfy seats, and is full of books that I devour on a regular basis. The seats are great for a spot to relax and read any of the awesome books in there. The computers are handy for research for school or if I just want to play a game. I am in this part of my library most of the time. This area is just cool all-around.

In conclusion, because of the several things in my library that I love, and my personal experiences there, I think it is just about as fantastic as a library can get. Plus it also has what, in my opinion, is the most important thing to have in a library. The feeling of a home away from home.
