Propelling Library Rule
by Jennifer Livingston
"The world is moved along, not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker," is a direct quote from a very well known woman named Helen Keller. It is not just an individual person but also groups of people that have the ability to create an environment around us to feel either warm and friendly or pushy and status quo.
Obtaining a library card at a library that was close by as far as mileage is concerned was so very simple and had no obstacles when I first obtained it. The Guilderland Branch on Route 20 was especially charming on the first visit. I needed to use their computer for E-mail access and they graciously issued me a library card so that I could use their computers with ease. Guilderland's branch has a computer reservation system set up where you just scan your library card to reserve a computer but one day it rejected my card. After the computer no longer accepted my card, requesting help from the librarian resulted in the information that it was because it was programed to reject any that were issued to people out of their district and if we wanted to keep them that we would now have to spend money. The honest librarians appologetically explained that their branch is the very last to impose a twenty five dollar yearly fee to any out of district library card holders. This news could not have come at a worse time because a mass lay-off has left me unemployed.
For the propelling library rule that was momentarily detained by a large hearted Guilderland library that wanted to have a warm and friendly environment for us to come to, I want to personally thank them and will remember that brief moment with great fondness and esteem.
