  • Isadore Gilbert Mudge Award
    Sponsored by Gale Cengage Learning, the Isadore Gilbert Mudge Award was established in 1958. It presents a cash award of $5,000 and a citation to an individual who has made a distinguished contribution to reference librarianship.
  • Gale Cengage Learning Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship
    Established in 1989, the Gale Cengage Learning Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship presents a citation and $3,000 cash award to an individual who has made a significant contribution to business librarianship.
  • Genealogical Publishing Company Award
    Established in 1992 and sponsored by Genealogical Publishing Company, this award presents a citation and $1,500 cash to a librarian, library or publisher and recognizes professional achievement in historical reference and research librarianship.
  • Gale Cengage Learning Award for Excellence in Reference and Adult Library Services
    Established in 1990, the Gale Cengage Learning Award for Excellence in Reference and Adult Library Services is a citation and $3,000 cash award presented to a library or library system for developing an imaginative and unique resource to meet patrons' reference needs.
  • Achievement in Library Diversity Research Honor
    As part of its ongoing support of the propagation of library-based diversity research, the ALA Office for Diversity annually honors an individual for "Achievement in Library Diversity Research" with a plaque and complimentary annual conference registration. 
  • ACRL Academic/Research Librarian of the Year Award
    The ACRL Academic/Research Librarian of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding member of the library profession who has made a significant national or international contribution to academic or research librarianship and library development.
  • ACRL Distinguished Education and Behavioral Sciences Librarian Award
    This award honors a distinguished academic librarian who has made an outstanding contribution as an education and/or behavioral sciences librarian through accomplishments and service to the profession.
  • ACRL DLS Haworth Press Distance Learning Librarian Conference Sponsorship Award
    This conference sponsorship award honors any individual ACRL member working in the field of, or contributing to the success of distance learning librarianship or related library service in higher education.
  • ACRL EBSCO Community College Learning Resources and Library Achievement Awards
    These two annual awards recognize significant achievement in the areas of programs and leadership.
  • ACRL Instruction Section Innovation Award
    This annual award recognizes and honors librarians who have developed and implemented innovative approaches to information literacy that support best practices in education at their respective institutions or in their communities.
  • ACRL Instruction Section Miriam Dudley Instruction Librarian Award
    This award recognizes an individual librarian who has made an especially significant contribution to the advancement of instruction in a college or research library environment. The award honors Miriam Dudley, whose pioneering efforts in the field of bibliographic instruction led to the formation of the ACRL Instruction Section (formerly ACRL Bibliographic Instruction Section).
  • ACRL Marta Lange/CQ Press Award
    This annual award recognizes an academic or law librarian who, through research, service to the profession, or other creative activity, makes distinguished contributions to bibliography and information service in law or political science. This award honors Marta Lange, 1990-91 Law and Political Science Sections (LPSS) Chair, whose exceptional talents as a leader were enhanced by a wonderful collegial spirit.
  • ACRL WSS Achievement in Women's Studies Librarianship Awards
    The Women’s Studies Section awards are given annually to honor distinguished academic librarians who have made outstanding contributions to women’s studies through accomplishments and service to the profession.
  • ALCTS Esther J. Piercy Award
    Recognizes contributions to library collections and technical services by a librarian with fewer than ten years of professional experience who has shown outstanding promise for continuing contribution and leadership.
  • ALCTS LBI George Cunha and Susan Swartzburg Award
    The award acknowledges and supports cooperative preservation projects and/or rewards individuals or groups that foster collaboration for preservation goals.
  • ALCTS Leadership in Library Acquisitions Award
    This award of $1,500, donated by Harrassowitz Company, recognizes the contributions by and outstanding leadership of an individual to the field of acquisitions librarianship.
  • ALCTS Margaret Mann Citation
    Awarded for outstanding professional achievement in cataloging or classification through publication of significant professional literature, participation in professional cataloging associations, or valuable contributions to practice in individual libraries.
  • ALCTS Outstanding Collaboration Citation
    Award recognizes and encourages collaborative problem-solving efforts in the areas of acquisition, access, management, preservation, or archiving of library materials.
  • ALCTS Paul Banks and Carolyn Harris Preservation Award
    A $1,500 grant donated by Preservation Technologies, L.P., and a citation given to a professional preservation specialist who has been active in the field of preservation and/or conservaiton for library and/or archival materials.
  • ALCTS Presidential Citations
    Very special awards honor ALCTS members who make significant contributions to the association and to the profession but whose accomplishments do not fall within the criteria for ALCTS' other awards. They are awarded by the current ALCTS President.
  • ALCTS Ross Atkinson Lifetime Achievement Award
    Recognizes the contribution of a library leader through demonstrated exceptional service to ALCTS and its areas of interest (acquisitions, cataloging and classification, collection management and development, preservation and reformatting, and serials). Established 2007.
  • ALCTS Ulrich's Serials Librarianship Award
    The award, a citation and $1,500 donated by Ulrich, is given for distinguished contributions to serials librarianship, including leadership in serials-related activities through participation in professional associations and/or library education programs; contributions to the body of serials literature; research in the area of serials; developing tools or methods to enhance access to or management of serials; and other advances leading to a better understanding of the field of serials.
  • ALTAFF Major Benefactors Honor Award
    The ALTA Major Benefactors Award is a citation presented to an individual, corporation, or family for major benefaction by the ALTA Division.
  • ALTAFF Trustee Citations
    The ALTA Trustee Citation award is awarded by the American Library Association and the ALTA Division. It is presented during the Opening General Session at the ALA Annual Conference, and honors the best contributions and efforts of citizens who sit on library boards.
  • ASCLA Cathleen Bourdon Service Award
    A citation presented to recognize an ASCLA personal member for outstanding service and leadership to the division. Deadline for nominations: December 15.
  • ASCLA Leadership Achievement Award
    A citation presented to recognize leadership and achievement in the following areas of activity: consulting, multitype library cooperation, and state library development. Deadline for nominations: December 15.
  • ASCLA Professional Achievement Award
    A citation presented to one or more ASCLA members for professional achievement within the areas of consulting, networking, statewide service and programs. Deadline for nominations: December 15.
  • Beta Phi Mu Award
    An annual award consisting of $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement to a library school faculty member or to an individual for distinguished service to education for librarianship. The nominations must be accompanied by a specific statement of qualifications of the nominee. Supporting evidence or testimonials are welcome.Donated by the Beta Phi Mu International Library Science Honorary Society. Deadline is February 1.
  • Elizabeth Futas Catalyst for Change Award
    A biannual award consisting of $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement recognizing and honoring a librarian who invests time and talent to make positive changes in the profession of librarianship. The award is funded by contributions to the Elizabeth Futas Memorial Fund at the American Library Association. Deadline is December 1, 2009.
  • FAFLRT Achievement Award
    The FAFLRT Achievement Award recognizes an individual for achievement in the promotion of library and information service and the information profession in the Federal community.
  • FAFLRT Distinguished Service Award
    The 'FAFLRT Distinguished Service Award' is awarded to a FAFLRT member for outstanding and sustained contributions to the round table.
  • Honorary Membership Criteria
    Honorary membership may be conferred on a living citizen of any country whose contribution to librarianship or a closely related field is so outstanding that it is of lasting importance to the advancement of the whole field of library service. It is intended to reflect honor upon the ALA as well as upon the individual. Deadline is September 1.
  • Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award
    This award honors the life and accomplishments of Hugh C. Atkinson, one of the major innovators in modern librarianship, and recognizes outstanding achievements (including risk-taking) by academic librarians that have contributed significantly to improvements in the areas of library automation, library management, and/or library development and research.
  • John Ames Humphry/OCLC/Forest Press Award
    The award consists of a prize of $1,000 and a certificate, which are presented at the International Relations Round Table Reception at the ALA Annual Conference. The award is given to a librarian or person who has made significant contributions to international librarianship.
  • Joseph W. Lippincott Award
    An annual award consisting of $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation presented annually to a librarian for distinguished service to the profession of librarianship, such service to include outstanding participation in the activities of the professional library association, notable published professional writing, or other significant activity on behalf of the profession and its aims. Founded by the late Joseph W. Lippincott and now donated by his grandson, Joseph W. Lippincott, III. Deadline is December 1.
  • Ken Haycock Award for Promoting Librarianship
    An annual award consisting of $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement honoring an individual for contributing significantly to the public recognition and appreciation of librarianship through professional performance, teaching, and/or writing. Donated by Ken Haycock. Deadline is February 1.

    To honor LLAMA committees or task forces, recognizing outstanding teamwork supporting the goals of LLAMA.
  • LLAMA Leadership Award
    To honor an individual LLAMA member for outstanding contributions and support to LLAMA and LLAMA sections or committees.

    To honor an individual who is not a LLAMA member or an organization that has made outstanding contributions and support to LLAMA and LLAMA sections or committees.

  • Melvil Dewey Medal
    An annual award of $2000 and a bronzed medal and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement for recent creative leadership of high order, particularly in those fields in which Melvil Dewey was actively interested: library management, library training, cataloging and classification, and the tools and techniques of librarianship. Donated by OCLC/Forest Press, Inc. Deadline is February 1.

  • Paul Howard Award for Courage
    A bi-annual award consisting of $1,000 and a 24k gold-framed citation of achievement honoring a librarian, library board, library group, or an individual who has exhibited unusual courage for the benefit of library programs or services. Deadline is December 1, 2008.

    The Virginia Boucher-OCLC Distinguished ILL (Interlibrary Loan) Librarian Award is an annual award which recognizes a librarian for outstanding professional achievement, leadership, and contributions to interlibrary loan and document delivery through recent publication of significant professional literature, participation in professional associations, and/or innovative approaches to practice in individual libraries.
