54 Free Libraries in Philadelphia to Close Due to Budget Cuts – Here’s How to Help!

Those who visit the Web site for the Free Library of Philadelphia are now going to be met with some sad and startling news. The above image appears, indicating that the Library’s 54 locations are to close October 2, unless enough people contact their state representatives saying, “Please keep our vital libraries open!”
The Library Web site has even provided visitors with a pre-written letter to mail to their legislator. The letter makes some good points:
“Usage of the Library’s resources has increased dramatically this year as job seekers use the free public computers for job searches, and very shortly, children will be depending on their libraries for homework help in our safe environment after school (most Philadelphia public schools have no libraries!). Seniors use the libraries to access information about social security and other federal benefits—information now found only online.”
As you might imagine, the problem is money. Here are some of the things that would be lost as a result:
- free books, movies, magazines, and music
- free Wi-fi
- help getting a job
- daycare programs
- programs for seniors
Other important things that could disappear:
- youth sports leagues
- fewer police officers
- fewer firefighters
So, if you think this is a bad way to try to save money, it’s easy to help out!
